The Power of Love

It’s heartbreaking to watch as Alzheimer’s and Dementia take a hold of a loved one but every now and again there are moments of magic. Those precious flickers where the windows of the soul open, the condensation clears and for a split second you see straight to the heart of your loved one and realise they are still in there

Mum has always been a dog lover, she actually used to breed pedigree Scottie dogs. Many a weekend morning was spent chatting the hours away whilst walking 3 Scotties, the afternoons spent bathing them before letting them dry in the sunshine. I was never really in to dolls which on reflection is hardly surprising, who needs a doll when you can proudly push Mackie the most placid dog in the world around the garden in a vintage pram. I will never forget how furious Dad was on coming home early from work  to discover this was how i spent my days only to quickly realise it was my Mums idea! “If I’ve told you once, I’ve told you twice they’re animals; no bloody bairns”. Mum can be quite quiet these days but when i remind her of this story she will still take delight in telling us all “whit a rage he was in!” One glance at Mackie still lying paw and belly to the air all tucked in under a crochet blanket  and even he couldn’t stifle a proper belly laugh as he called Mac a “gype”.

Such is Mum’s love of dogs she has been known to phone and ask how our dog Reuben is getting on before she remembers to ask after the kids! His christmas present is always handed out first and he is included in all cards even receiving mail addressed to Master Reuben over the years!

Yesterday we took a walk up to my Mum’s care home with an extra surprise for her. Can you tell he has missed his Nana? We watched as he greeted his old friend and showered her in love whilst she met him for the first time and fell in love with him all over again.
